Abstract

The elementary estimation of a stopping distance treats a vehicle as a rigid body, neglecting its tendency to rotate about its centre of mass when the brakes are applied. D P Whitmire and T J Alleman of the University of Southwestern Louisiana have been looking at a more physical calculation ( Am. J. Phys. 1979 47 89) and considering the effect of wheel skid.
