I review a number of topics from stellar nucleosynthesis, predominantly in stars of low and intermediate mass, which are related to the scientific work done in the research group of B Gustafsson. These topics concern recent updates of nuclear reaction rates, the solar model, the carbon–nitrogen–oxygen cycle and proton nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch stars.
