It has been reported that chitinases from insects and plants act in ecdysis,1} and in self-defense against pathogens,2'^respectively.However, there have been fewinvestigations of the enzyme in marine invertebrates.In prawns, the enzyme seems to be significant in the molting process and in the digestion of chitin-containing foods.In this paper, we report the purification and properties of chitinase from the liver of a prawn, Penaeusjaponicus.Chitinase (EC 3.2.1.14) was purified from the liver (34g) of 40 prawns (Penaeus japonicus) with an average body
