Abstract
It has been shown pharmacologically that the smooth muscle of the guinea-pig taenia coli is supplied with two types of inhibitory nerves; adrenergic nerves and non-adrenergic nerves. Recently Burnstock et al. (1) have suggested that ATP or related nucleotide is a transmitter substance of non-adrenergic inhibitory nerves. It would be of great interest to determine whether or not any differences exist between an inhibitory response to ATP and stimulation of non-adrenergic nerves under various conditions.
