Abstract
Visual communication refers to communication that takes place by means of a visual aid. It includes all type of visual representations such as paintings, drawings, photographs, charts, figures, graphs, and symbols placed in different media. Studies of visual communication, in its broadest sense, focus on understanding the production, composition, and interpretation of visuals.Visual communication is studied by scholars from many disciplines who ask different questions and adopt different approaches and methods, which results in anything but a coherent field of study. Therefore, a brief overview of different approaches to studying visual communication is presented in this entry, and central theories and concepts are explained. The importance of visual communication to strategic communication is presented more in detail.
