Abstract
In this chapter we examine the different types of floors including ground and suspended floors and how they have developed over time. The use of notches in floor joists and their impact on the strength of the joist is examined. A typical floor joist design is included in the chapter and joist span tables for grade C16 and C24 timbers are provided. The problems encountered in floors are also discussed including damp, sulphate attack and salts.
