Abstract

Stress strain response of soils has been influenced by the characteristics and types of grains in its macrostructure. The presence of water molecules between the particles interstices has also exhibit an influence on the shear strength of the soil, through an isotropic tensor known as suction. Md. Noor & Anderson (2006) introduced a soil volume change framework that can explain the interaction between effective stress and shear strength during soil volume change behaviour known as Rotational Multiple Yield Surface Framework (RMYSF). From this model, a study has been conducted to observe the behaviour of different soil characteristics from the stress strain response from conventional consolidated drained triaxial test for saturated soil and triaxial test using the double wall apparatus for unsaturated soil. The appreciation of this framework has led to the establishment of a unique relationship between the shear strength parameter, φ against axial strain, ε of the soil irrespective of the applied effective stress during the tests.
