Abstract

The relations between the coefficient of friction and the mechanism of wear have been researched by means of the original apparatus for friction measurements.The frictional force is larger in the oxidizing wear than in the destructive wear. The destructive wear is easily caused on α+β brass and β brass but not on α brass which usually remains in the state of oxidizing. The frictional force of brass containing Ph is more or less small, especially α brass containing Pb shows considerably small coefficient of friction, for usually the condition of wear is not oxidizing. At the higher rubbing speed the coefficient of friction becomes smaller, and this is explained from the fall of adhesive force by the rise of oxidizing speed on the break down surface, the tendency for brittleness of brass surface, and the increase of frictional shock.
