Abstract

This chapter presents cell culture technologies enabling the production of biopharmaceuticals using continuous biomanufacturing. Different types of continuous cell culture systems are discussed with a special attention to perfusion cultures. The drivers for a continuous bioproduction are outlined, and the challenges in their implementation are discussed. The history of continuous cell culture, current state-of-the-art technologies, and products from continuous cell culture processes are presented. Continuous cell culture in perfusion mode requires special cell retention systems, and various examples of these devices are discussed. Finally, the design, operation, implementation, and scale-up of these processes are outlined.
