Abstract
This chapter discusses the purpose, principle of operation, specifications, and applications of blood grouping machine. Automated blood grouping machine is used to determine a person’s blood type by performing tests such as ABO grouping, Rh typing, antibody screening, and cross matching. Blood grouping systems can be divided into four groups depending upon the presence or absence of the two antigens A and B. Blood group testing can be done manually or with automatic instrumentation systems. Solid Phase Red Cell Adherence Assay (SPRCA) is a technique in which red cells are first immobilized onto a solid support medium polystyrene. Erythromagnetic technology is based on the use of paramagnetic particles that are adsorbed on the surface of RBCs. Automated blood grouping systems are mostly used in hospital blood banks and blood transfusion/donor centres for blood typing prior to a blood transfusion or when classifying a person’s blood for donation.
