Abstract

Abstract Hate crime has become a topic of increased interest and research in recent decades. Hate crime incidents—some of them violent and a few even lethal—have caught the media's attention as well. While a body of knowledge about hate crime is slowly growing, many questions remain unanswered. This chapter addresses some of the main issues related to hate crime, beginning with defining them and distinguishing them from hate speech. The chapter continues with a summary of what we know about the victims and prevalence of hate crime, including a discussion of the problems associated with its measurement. Finally, the chapter discusses research on hate crime offenders.
