Abstract

Abstract This chapter examines the concept of inhibition of return (IOR) and its possible role in disengaging attention. It analyses the effects and the mechanism responsible for IOT and suggests that these can be considered as the result of the inhibition of attention returning to a previously attended or cued location. It contends that the cueing effect that is measured by IOR will depend on the cue-target stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) as well as on the task to be performed with the target.
