Abstract

Twenty species of unarmoured, marine dinoflagellates assignable to Gymnodinium were encountered during a survey of the flagellate flora near Melbourne, Australia, 1985/86. Thirteen are previously undescribed. The new species are illustrated by micrographs and drawings of live cells. The new species are: Gymnodinium allophron, G. amphityphlum (+), G. atomatum, G. dentatum, G. galeatum. G. guttiforme, G. minutulum, G. octo. G. parvulum, G. polycomma, G. prolatum, G. pulchellum (+), G. pumilum (+). Three of the new species, marked by (+), are phototrophic.
