Periodontics

As a dentist you primarily treat two diseases, dental caries and periodontal disease. Almost half (47.2%) of adults aged 30 and older have some form of periodontal disease, and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recommends that all adults receive an annual comprehensive periodontal evaluation to assess their periodontal health status and identify conditions that require additional treatment. It is your responsibility to diagnose periodontal disease, understand the periodontal–systemic relationship, treat periodontal disease, and know when to refer to a periodontist.
