Abstract

This paper focuses on two topics of particular interest to Swedish transportation planners: the increasing numbers of elderly car drivers and public transportation for elderly and handicapped persons. The increasing numbers of elderly drivers may have traffic safety implications in the future, although little study has been done on elderly drivers and further research is recommended in this area. The special public transportation needs of the elderly and handicapped is discussed, and the Swedish policy on transportation facilities for this group is summarized. It is concluded that the provision of special technical aids must be accompanied by clear instructions and guides to their use in order to provide maximum service and security to the elderly and the handicapped. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 286189. (TRRL)
