Abstract

Autophagy and cellular senescence are two evolutionally conservative and essential processes of organisms. They both are thought to be mechanisms of cellular self-protection, sharing similarities in many aspects. A majority of stressors and signaling molecules jointly participate in their regulation. Autophagy could have two opposite effects on senescence, either promotion or inhibition depending on varying types, time and space of autophagy. Autophagy and cellular senescence now are emerging as two attractive druggable targets in clinical study. How to utilize autophagy to delay ageing is a hot research point. This review described the dual action of autophagy on senescence and introduced advances in clinical anti-ageing via autophagy.
