Abstract

Abstract A tutorial overview of geometric optics is given. The article begins with a historical introduction, followed by a review of the basic principles of geometric optics, and then the following topics are discussed: (1) paraxial approximation and ray matrix optics, (2) third‐order aberrations, (3) relationships between geometric optics and antenna theory, and (4) extensions to geometric optics.
