Abstract

The original sources of coal are a variety of ancient plant forms and their woody precursors. The definition of low-rank coal is therefore different from that of Alberta Energy, in which subbituminous is considered low-rank coal due to its use in the generation of electricity. In addition to their quality, low-rank coal materials should also be evaluated with respect to their safety during handling and field application. Overall, Alberta low-rank coal, or low-rank coal in general, is safe with respect to its handling and field application. Important properties of the material with respect to its safety must be recorded in the form of a safety data sheet. Low-rank coal is a type of material containing lower calorific values than those of anthracite, bituminous, and subbituminous. Low-rank coal, including Alberta low-rank coal, is unique, different from other coal materials, and therefore is not to be confused with them.
