Abstract

The first phase of a project for the investigation of the chemistry and structure of coal-derived asphaltenes has been initiated. Asphaltenes have been isolated from the products originated from three different coal liquefaction processes. Duffy's procedure has been applied to these crude asphaltenes to remove the contaminated resin. Updated results indicate that the asphaltene as obtained conventionally from solvent fractionation still contains fair amounts of polar resin.
