Abstract
On the 18th January 1980 an off-course bulk carrier collided with the Tjoern Bridge, bringing the arch span and the deck slab down into the water. On the 19th June, Skanska was appointed contractor, and on the 9th November 1981, the new bridge was opened for traffic. The entire project has taken no more than half the time normally required for the construction of a structure this size. The new bridge is a cable stayed bridge with concrete pylons, a 366 M long main span of steel, and concrete approaches. The design and construction are briefly described in this article. (TRRL)
