Fishery and bionomics of tunas at Tuticorin

Abstract

In the fishery along Tuticorin Coast in the Gulf of \nMannar, seven species of tuna and tuna-like fishes \noccur. They are the little tunny Euthynnus affinis \n(Cantor), Frigate mackerel Auxis thazard (Lacepede), \nbullet tuna Auxis rochei (Risso), oriental bonito, \nSarda orientalis (Temminck and Schlegel), yellowfln \ntuna Thunnus albacares (Temminck and Schlegel), \nskipjack tuna Katsuwonus pelamis (Linnaeus) and long \ntail tuna Thunnus tonggol (Bleeker). In addition, \namong the billfishes, the sailflsh Istiophorus platypterus \n(Shaw and Nodder) and the striped marlin Tetrapterus \naudax (Philippi) also occur in the fishery.
