The prawn fishery of Kanyakumari District \nwhich accounts for about 500 tonnes of prawns a \nyear is exclusively constituted by large-sized \nfirst and second year classes of a single species \nof penaeid prawn Penueus indicus. The fishing \nseason extends throughout the monsoon period when \nprawn fishery in other areas of west coast of India \nis inactive.
