Abstract

How resonance absorption of neutrons in Pu/sup 239/, Pu/sup 240/, and Pu/ sup 241/ affects the properties of a nuclear reactor whose uranium fuel elements have a slight plutonium enrichment was studied. The improvement of the neutron balance and the ensuing increase of the multiplication constant k because of epithermal fission of Pu/sup 239/ and Pu/sup 241/ was derived. Furthermore, the time-variation of the fuel composition was discussed, making due allowance for epithermal buildup and burn-up of U/sup 238/ and the Pu isotopes. (auth)
