Esox lucius or Northern Pike is in the family Esocidae. Esox is an old European name for the pike and lucius is the Latin name for the species. it was at one time thought that the pike of Europe and North America were separate, however it has been determined that the differences were a cause of the history of its distribution. There are two morphological forms in North America because the pike migrated from both the Mississippi and Yukon glacial refuges.
