Abstract

The Indian Tiger prawn Penaeus monodon \nFabricius 1798 is the largest species among the \npenaeids and is commonly known as “Jumbo Tiger \nPrawn” in the Indo-Pacific region. The identity of \nthis species was the subject matter of protracted \ndiscussions among carcinologists for over a \ncentury. For a long time, there was confusion in the \nidentification of this species from the closely related \nPenaeus semisulcatus de Haan. The designation of \na neotype in place of the lost original type of \nFabricius by Holthuis (1949) has finally resolved \nthe century-long confusion of this species with P. \nsemisulcatus de Haan.
