Karnataka waters, on the upper part of S.W. coast \nof India produce an average total of 786 tonnes of tuna \nannually (1972-'81) forming 0.7% of the state's marine \nfish catch and 5 % of the total tuna catch of India. Of \nlate, the production rate of this resource in the state \nhad gone upto an average of 1,729 tonnes per year \n(1979-81). This rapid progress was achieved by the \nintroduction of modern fishing techniques such as \npurse seining, deployment of mechanised crafts for \ndrift gill netting and synthetic materials for gears.
