Abstract
Through trains are the best quality that railway can offer, for the lowest price. Since trains do not stop between terminals, the hauls are short enough to allow overnight service, which customers have come to expect. But one through train is profitable only if it transports at least 100,000 tons per year. This means that only a few direct railway routes between intermodal terminals can be established. On the COMMUTOR automatic quick transfer yard: Up to 60 trains will transit during one night; No train will be kept on the yard for a time longer than 1.5 hours; and the cost of the train-shipment operations will be especially low.
