Surgical anatomy of the guinea pig middle ear.

Abstract

Our study documents the anatomy of the middle ear of the guinea pig. The relative similarities to and differences from the human middle ear are noted. The guinea pig's ossicular chain, which involves two ossicles, the projection of the cochlea into the middle ear cleft, and the relatively greater space of the inferior chamber, are essential differences. Many similarities were found, such as the relationship of the facial nerve to the oval window
