Abstract
The concept of a trimaran frigate was introduced in 1992. There are several advantages perceived for this new ship configuration, however the essential attraction is centred on the reduced powering requirement at top speeds due to the very slender main hull. This paper focuses on the issues and the decisions behind the choice of the hull form configuration for the first comprehensive set of trimaran model tests and parallel investigations. Studies led to focusing on seakeeping as the primary feature of uncertainty requiring comprehensive investigation. The issues in selecting the ship design on which the model tests were targeted are outlined as these influenced many of the detailed choices on hull form. These included the decision to investigate two distinct outrigger separations from the central hull. The hull form evolution is described for both the central hull and the side hulls. Finally, the considerations with regard to the cross structure linking the hulls are given.
