Abstract
Studied was the effect of ectomycorrhizae formed by the fungus Pisolithus tinctorius on growth of loblolly and shortleaf pine seedlings in acid coal spoils. Seedling production was tested on both Kentucky and Virginia coal spoils. Pisolithus ectomycorrhizae improved the survival and growth of pine seedlings; seedlings treated with ectomycorrhizae from Thelephora terrestris exhibited lower growth rates and accumulated higher levels of selenium, iron, aluminum, and manganese. The use of Pisolithus ectomycorrhizae in land reclamation projects should be studied further. (23 references, 3 tables)
