Abstract
The 28-m Fairfield Underpass was built under the A507 trunk road in Stotfold, Bedfordshire to provide a link for pedestrians and cyclists between the town and a new development on the south side of the town. Geoffrey Osborne won the contract with an innovative approach that cut 12 weeks off the schedule and confined traffic disruption to just one weekend. The entire structure of precast concrete sections was built in a purpose-built casting pit to one side of the road and then driven into position over the weekend closure. The structure was built using EFCO tunnel formwork and specialist multi-axle trailer systems (Sarens' SPMT units). Details are given of the underpass design, formwork strategy, and construction logistics.
