Abstract

The multi-leg tanker mooring system consists of five to eight mooring points. The test item is made up of a buoy, anchor, and the connecting riser cable. A lightweight, high-holding power anchor of the explosive embedment type is the unique feature of this system. The anchor, a mooring buoy, and associated launching gear are assembled into a packaged unit (launch-can), which is towed into position by Mooring Installation Boat. After the mooring buoy is pulled from the unit, the container is used as a launcher for the explosive anchor. The explosive embedment anchor (EEA) is released from the launch-can and fired by a contact fuze upon contact with the ocean floor. It is useable immediately after being keyed into position and proof-tested for 100,000-lb holding power. The EEA is designed for a 300,000-lb holding capacity under the most favorable sea-floor conditions. Weight is approximately 9 tons per leg. The System, Vessel Mooring, Multi-Leg, failed to satisfy the essential requirements of the QMR in the following tests: Preoperational Inspection, Installation, Mooring and Unmooring, and Reliability (ST).
