Abstract

After a short description of the current neutron sources, a melted-off tube resembling an x-ray tube is described. This tube supplies neutrons of 14 Mev, At a supply voltage of 125 kv the output exceeds 10/sup 8/ neutrons/sec, The neutrons are made by means of a nuclear reaction between deuterium and tritium: T(d,n)He/sup 4/. The deuterons are produced in a Penning ion source. The catch plate consists of silver coated with titanium which contains tritium. The tube is filled with a deuterium-tritium mixture (pressure 10/sup -3/ torr). The duration of life of the neutron tubes amounts to more than 1000 hours. Some characteristic applications are mentioned. (auth)
