Abstract

Abstract The Corporate Planning Process within ST-‐Ericsson requires each division within the company to develop its own five-‐year plan, which later will be consolidated into a corporate long-‐term plan. L3M, the division subject to this study, has so far only submitted one long-‐term plan. Both the process of developing the plan and the plan itself was considered unsatisfactory. This thesis attempts to map the current planning process to identify the cause for the dissatisfaction, identify an ideal long-‐term planning process based on a litera-‐ ture study and empirics, and finally evaluate to which extent the ideal process can be implemented by proposing a viable long-‐term planning process for the division. All results presented in this report derive from a literature study, observations, interviews, and a survey conducted to gather qualitative data of how other com-‐ pany approaches long-‐term planning. The proposed process fulfills all the specified requirements by the division, but does unfortunately only implement a few of the ideas presented in the literature. To implement the ideas presented by the academia, major structural changes to the planning process are required, even on a corporate level, which is out of the scope of this thesis. Results from the survey show that all of the participants have experience of long-‐ term planning in the companies they currently hold a position. Interestingly none of them have experience of companies that exploit the full potential of planning, by including all areas of the business in the plan. Although no statistical conclusions can be drawn from the survey, it appears that planning in theory is a lot more advanced than the planning processes imple-‐ mented in reality.
