Evaluation for the community-based methadone maintenance treatment in Guangzhou City.

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effect for Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) in Guangzhou city. Methods The MMT patients were interviewed using questionnaire for drug abuse, sexual behavior, family relationship, and job-desire. Follow-up interviews were conducted 6 months after the first interview. Results Six months after admission, heroin use rate dropped from 100% at baseline to 13.8%(χ2=98.378,P0.01). The rate of illicit injecting reduced from 95.4% to 12.3% (χ2=90.257,P0.01). Self-reported criminal behaviors reduced from 12.3 % to 3.1 % (χ2=3.973,P0.05). Employment increased from 10.8% before treatment to 30.8% after 6 months (χ2=7.900,P0.01). Conclusion MMT was effective in reducing heroin use, high-risk drug abusing behavior, crime, and improving family and social function.
