Abstract

The accuracy of any WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) measurement is affected by vehicle dynamics. The load measured by a WIM sensor is only one point in the time-varying dynamic load. The difference between the dynamic and the static loads depends on the load position on the pavement, pavement roughness, the vehicle speed and configuration. A simulation of the dynamic wheel load was made for Weigh-In-Motion. The requirement for the pavement roughness condition for WIM purposes was found to depend on the required tolerances of the load estimated by the WIM system and the vehicle speed. The possible deviations of the dynamic loads from the reference static load under different vehicle speeds and pavement roughness have been obtained from the simulation results.
