Abstract
A review is given of the present innumerous measurements in the range of the L alpha line and in the uv continuum at the time of solar flares. The relation of the flash intensities, recorded in these ranges, to the developmental stages of the flare is discussed. An estimate of the temperature of the flare region, radiating in L alpha and of the concentration of hydrogen atoms in their fundamental state is made. It was found that the concentration of the hydrogen atoms and the electron concentration in the investigated parts of the flare are of the same order. The analysis of the L alpha radiation of flares leads to the conclusion that in some parts of the flare complex local heating of small flare regions takes place to higher temperature with subsequent heating, which is connected with an emission in H alpha as a result of the diffusion of L alpha radiation, which comes from the warmer regions of the flare. Some of the physical parameters were computed and their time relations investigated. It was found that the observations of the emission in the Lyman range can yield important facts on the physical and spatial structure of some ofmore » the pants of the complex of the whole flare.
