Abstract

This article discusses the problem of urban sprawl, discussing its economic, social, and environmental impacts, and analyzes sprawl’s main causes, focusing on damaging governmental subsidies and zoning regulations. It describes and analyzes current means of addressing sprawl through smart growth and innovative development, such as New Urbanism, conservation subdivisions, and low-impact development, and concludes with a discussion of the continuing challenges that face creating this new community.
