Abstract
The study examined effective leadership practices of principals for sustainable development in secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. The study was guided by two research questions and two hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was employed for the study. The population of the study comprised 5,547 respondents made up of 261 principals and 5,286 teachers in all the 261 public secondary schools in Anambra State. Stratified proportionate sampling technique was used to draw 832 respondents made up of 39 principals and 793 teachers. The instrument for data collection was a researcher-developed questionnaire titled Effective Leadership Practices for Sustainable Development Questionnaire (ELPSDQ). The instrument was duly validated by three experts and the reliability of the instrument was ascertained using Cronbach Alpha which yielded overall coefficient of 0.78. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and t-test to test the hypotheses. The results of the study revealed among others that transformational leadership practices are adopted by principals for sustainable development in secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that Post Primary School Service Commission should organize capacity building programmes to empower principals on the application of instructional leadership practices for sustainable development.
