SOCIAL STRATIFICATION DURING FRENCH REVOLUTION ERA REFLECTED IN A TALE OF TWO CITIES

Abstract

This research is purposively conducted in order to reveal social stratification issue within some characters in the story. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens the story about the social stratification During French Revolution Era, the inequality between the upper class, middle class and the lower class. The stratification reveal from the condition of characters in the story that represent the upper class, Middle class and lower class. The method which used by the researcher is qualitative method. The method assists the writer to explain the social stratification in French Revolution Era within the story that represented from the characters. Furthermore, the researcher gains the data by collecting it in A Tale of Two Cities novel and analyzed the data by using social stratification theory by Max Weber. Based on the result of the data analysis, the main focus of this thesis is identifying strata, the social role some characters. In analyzing the issue of the novel as the topic of this thesis, the writer will use sociological approach based on the aspect of stratification based on the social stratification theory by Max Weber. The result of this research is about the social stratification during French Revolution Era, the identification of difference social strata between upper class, middle class and lower class as well as the strata come up from the characters within the story that come from the nobility, professional worker and the servant, homeless also farmer. Therefore, it can be concluded that the aspects of social stratification that applies in society relates to the differences social stratification between the members of the society During French Revolution Era within the story. The social relationships is not always able to run well because there will be a time for conflict occurs when one of social class breaks the role become the strata boundaries between one to the others society.
