Abstract

Although air-dried seed can be irradiated with a dose of a million roentgens and can be germinated on planting, much lower doses are required for survival of the seedlings. Irradiation of various plant seeds show that the plants can be divided into three groups. In the radiosensitive group the tolerance for germination is 500,000 to 25,000 r. In the average radiosensitive group the tolerances are 1,500,000 r for germination, and 50,000 to 100,000 r for survival. In the radioresistant group the tolerances are 2,000,000 to 3,500,000 r for germination, and 200,000 to 300,000 r for survival. The grasses can be classified as stable to radiation with respect to germination, but are sensitive to radiation with respect to survival. In general, otlter types of seeds can be placed in one of the classifications outlined above. (TTT)
