Abstract
This chapter gives the reader an important insight as to the reasoning for civil aviation standards for aeronautical design and operations, looking at how they are established and developed in an international context. It is very important that civil aviation leaders have an understanding of civil aviation regulations as they are accountable for their compliance. It looks back in history as to how the civil aviation regulations were started at the Chicago Convention in 1944 and how they developed into what they are today. It evaluates and explains ICAO as the organisation that sets and reviews the standard, as well the leading civil aviation authorities of the US FAA, EU EASA and UAE GCAA, looking at their similarities and their differences in their published civil aviation regulations.
