Abstract

Overviews the increase in arts festivals and dance festivals in NZ over the past 20 years. Considers how well the festivals serve the dance community, noting fewer opportunities are provided for independent dance groups and freelance choreographers. Describes briefly the following multi-arts festivals: International Festival of Arts, Auckland Arts Festival, NZ Fringe Festival, Pasifika and Matariki. Looks at the dance specific festivals, Tempo° Dance Festival, Body Festival Dance, Ko whiti, and Dance Wellington. Touches on the festival dilemma of presenting new works and making profits.
