Evaluation of Levels of Adiponectin and Resistin in Gingival Crevicular Fluid in Periodontal Health, Disease and After Treatment: A Clinico Biochemical Study

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Chronic Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Resistin is a proinflammatory cytokine which is seen elevated in inflammatory conditions. Adiponectin mediates anti-inflammatory effects and functions in cell proliferation, differentiation, and regeneration. GCF collection is considered the most nontraumatic investigational method about periodontal tissue conditions. AIMS & OBJECTIVES: This study was done to evaluate the levels of GCF resistin and adiponectin in generalized chronic periodontitis patients before and after non surgical periodontal therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GCF samples were collected from a total of 50 subjects divided into three groups, group I- Healthy, group II- Chronic Periodontitis, group III- After treatment. The levels of resistin and adiponectin were evaluated using Immunotag™ Human RETN ELISA kit (ITEH0269) and Immunotag™ Human ADP (Adiponectin) ELISA kit (ITEH2593). RESULTS: There was an increase in the level of resistin and decrease in the level of adiponectin in the GCF samples collected baseline. After 21 days of post treatment there was a decrease in the level of resistin and increase in the level of adiponectin. CONCLUSION: Resistin and adiponectin can be used as a potential marker in generalized chronic periodontitis patients.
