The Sociology of Hate Crime

Abstract

This course will look at the phenomenon of hate crime both as a category of hate and as a category of crime. We will try to go beyond the mere enumeration of atrocities to understand how hate crime operates, the motives of the perpetrators and the response of the victims and target communities. We will attempt to put hate crime into a social and political context, seeing it not as an anomaly but as an extreme of the injustices and discourtesies that we both face and perpetrate every day.
