Abstract

This introductory chapter contextualizes the book’s focus on social policy in Iran and sets the stage for the chapters that follow. It examines the relevant socioeconomic and political characteristics of the country. These include poverty and inequality, growth and income per capita, unemployment and labor force participation, and inflation as well as internal and external political circumstances. The chapter highlights the need to increase government revenues for the provision of better and sustainable social services.
