Abstract

India is one of the countries where population growth is causing an increase in traffic volume. Furthermore, the government's approval of funds for transportation infrastructure development is insufficient. As a result, it is best to plan and design the road's geometric elements during the initial alignment stage, taking future traffic increase into account. It's also tough to improve geometric elements once they've been built, which might lead to unnecessary capital investment. The geometric design focuses on meeting the needs of the driver and the vehicle, such as safety, comfort, and efficiency. The main objective of this paper is to study about the geometric design of Highways and factors influencing it. In this paper we also discuss the geometric design for the widening of Highway is carried out using MX-Bentley software in accordance with IRC guidelines. According to current topographic data, this design includes horizontal and vertical profiling along the whole length of the route. To construct a smooth curve, the radius of the curve has been increased. The vertical profile was also created with the permitted gradient and sight distances in mind. As a result, it appears that larger traffic volume may be accommodated, as well as an increase in design speed.
