Roadside dust Analysis and Correlation with Urbanization Activities, the city of Hilla, Iraq as a case study

Abstract

Road “dust can affect the environment and people health when contains a higher concentration of heavy metals. Total of 86 samples were collected from roadside dust that representing different activities selected urbanization active in 40, 60, and 80 streets of Hilla city to analyze elements Pb, Cd, Ni, and Cu” during two seasons, dry and wet. The lead was the very available metals in the dust of all areas also found a clear seasonal impact of street dust emissions, with greater emission in dry, probably due to reducing pavement moisture. The maximum concentration of lead which was199.97mg/kg in 40 street during dry weather. While wet weather, the minimum concentration for the lead also that was 85.62 mg/kg was found in 60 street. The heavy traffic and the emission of cars, fuel station, as well as anthropogenic” sources different from residential and industrial activities, caused increasing of lead concentration. Also might be attributed to the wide use of lead gasoline in Hilla city.  “Analysis ANOVA of metal concentration revealed the contribution of human activities, industrial emissions, and traffic in the streets of Hilla dust. “The contamination factor (Cf) discovered that street dust is greatly contaminated by Pb, then that contaminated by Ni, Cd, and Cu” during dry weather especially at the industrial, residential and traffic region. Lead and Cadmium displayed more prominent environmental dangers than some other metals. These outcomes are critical for the “advancement of proper management strategies to reduce non-point source” contamination by different remediation ways
