Abstract

Abstract Probiotic drink which contains living microorganism has important role in health by influ¬encing immune system that can decrease inflammation. Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain can influence immune system through celullar and humoral mechanism. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of probiotic drink contains Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain on the healing process of oral mucosa lesion. The total of 36 Sprague dawley rats used in this study were divided randomly into 4 groups (n=9): group K- (negative control), group P-1 (treatment by systemic application of probiotic solution), group P-2 (treatment by topical application of probiotic solution), group K+ (positive control by topical application of hyaluronic acid gel). The oral mucosa lesion was made by rubbing the labial mucosa with H202 3% solution. The healing process was observed histopathologically on day 2, 4 and 7. Based on Kruskal-Wallis test, there was statistically significant difference between treta¬ment groups (p value = 0.001 5.33). This study concluded that the pro-biotic drink contains Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain application either systemically or topically may accelerate healing of oral mucosa lesion whereas the systemic application more effective at late stage (day 7) while topical application showed more effective at early stage (day 4).
