AN ANALYSIS OF ANXIETY IN SPARKS’ SAFE HAVEN(PSYCHOANALYSIS STUDY)

Anxiety occurs because of interference from the outside world that causes conflict between ego and superego and usually accompanied by physical sensations, like trembling, sweating, heartbeating, etc. This research uses Sigmund Freud's theory taken from the book Theory of Personality by Jess Feist and Gregory J. Feist. Since this research includes analysis, interpretation, and discussion of literary works, thus, it is classified into literary criticism. Freud divides the types of anxiety into 3 types, namely, neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety, all of which are contained in Sparks' Safe Haven. Safe Haven is a fantasy romantic novel. The author uses several steps in collecting the data, those are; reading and understanding the whole story, then finding the part of the story that contains the three types of anxiety and marking it. Classifying these data into the appropriate type is the final step that has been done by the researcher. Researcher uses psychological approach because the characters in the novel describe the state of their lives that are dominated by their psychological conditions. Researcher focus on examining the internal conflicts of the characters, namely, Katie, Alex, and Kevin. based on the story, they show panic and worry about situations that occur continuously in their lives that cause conflicts between ego and superego. The authors found Realistic anxiety to be more dominant than the other two types of anxiety. It is because each of the characters—especially for the main character—are still trapped in the memories of their past and those trigger the neurotic anxiety arises to warn them to stay alert. the second is the moral anxiety experienced by the characters, one of which is Kevin who has an affair with another woman which makes him feel guilty and ashamed as a result of his failure to behave in accordance with the moral values of the superego. and the last one is realistic anxiety caused by real events, such as that felt by Alex when he found that his son, Josh, almost drowned while fishing.
